Into the City of Flies

The once great walled city, no longer bustles with commerce. The clamour from the souks has been replaced by the maddening drones of flies. Hundreds of carnivorous man-sized flies infest the streets, rooftops and interiors. Now a forbidden place, where only fools might tread. A fool such as you, a former soldier on a deadly mission for a mysterious benefactor requesting you destroy an occult grimoire locked away in the library vault. Donning your old infantry uniform, you prepare your crossbow and pavise great-shield that saved you all those years ago. Before departing, you sand away the old coat of arms on your shield and choose to paint a new design to renew its strength.

YOU WILL NEED:

• A 6-sided die
• Coin
• Pencil/Pen

HOW TO PLAY:

Players begin by rolling a die to decide character stats: Strength, Perception, Intelligence Agility and Luck.

Every scene, players must pass a skill check to proceed. Players must meet the minimum skill value stated. Roll a die to receive a “chance” value that gets added to your character stats to determine success. (Skill Check = Stat + Chance)

After a failed skill check, the player must toss a coin to decide the cost of a retry: Heads = Free retry, Tails = lose 1 heart to retry. Should the player lose 3 hearts, it's game over.

For the story, I was inspired by a picture of a crossbowman with his (Pavise) great -shield. It got me thinking of an interesting dark fantasy setting I could see him in.
